This was my Christmas movie. It's traditional for Jews to go to the movies on Christmas...this was my family's pick. I highly recommend this flick, and although it wasn't quite out side of Tom Hank's comfortable typical roles...it was outside enough to make a funny yet poignant movie. Phillip Seymour Hoffman absolutely stole the show, and I hope he gets at least a nomination for a supporting role.
Hero
I love the imagery and color of this movie. A very good plot with a couple twists...but I cannot say enough about the colors, symbolism, and cinematography of this movie. Another great from a director who truly understands his media. I love Yimou Zhang's vision...Hero is an early attempt if you enjoy this movie you will enjoy House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower, and vice versa.
The Kingdom
I was surprised to learn Peter Berg directed this movie because I mainly know him as an actor. This is a great movie in all aspects...directing, acting, and story. Berg's style is reminiscent of Michael Mann, but somehow brighter, slightly less gritty, but just as real.

M and I watched The Kingdom last night. My favorite part was how they introduced the history of Saudi ARabia at the very beginning without using voice over (and yet, somehow, still using voiceover). Then, of course, the end: The way for everyone to get along is for Jamie Fox to go "be friends" with Arab children. Of course M thought the ending was Cinderella, but I don't exactly know what's Cinderella about "We will kill them all."
