A Couple Pics From my 30 Hour Stay In Milan

DAILY QUOTES

A book burrows into your life in a very profound way because the experience of reading is not passive.
~Erica Jong
The air was soft, the stars so fine, the promise of every cobbled alley so great that I thought I was in a dream.
~Jack Kerouac

Love means the body, the soul, the life, the entire being. We feel love as we feel the warmth of our blood, we breathe love as we breathe air, we hold it in ourselves as we hold our thoughts. Nothing more exists for us.
~Guy De Maupassant

Passing Trolleys in Milan

Madonna Billboard on the Duomo di Milano.
According to The Lonely Planet:
Its hub is the Duomo, a fantastic Gothic confection topped by the Maddonina (our little Madonna), Milan's protectress.
I have a suspicion that the H&M Madonna Billboard on the side of the cathedral isn't what they were talking about.

DAILY QUOTES

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.

Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.
~Robert Heinlein

Anybody Remember this?
I remember my father and I playing this 45 over and over again. This is a slight peek into my father's musical taste. He loves the old time favorites like; Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, ya know the swing era. Does this mean my pop is a closet swinger? Jesus I hope not. Well my mother and father did alot to shape my musical tastes. One of my fondest memories of growing up would be driving in the car w/ my pops. On the way to soccer practice or going to the lumber yard to pick up supplies for the latest project on the honey-do list. We would hop in his circa 1983 Cream with Tan top Buick Skylark, and he would ak me, backroads or regular? My answer would always be backroads, and he knew it. That was part of the charm of growing up in NOVA when I did. It was still relatively un-developed and the curvy, hilly, narrow roads meandered through the woods. In my mind these roads were once trails and dirt paths hewn out of the forest by ealrly colonial settlers, but had just been paved over in more in the modern era. Almost always my pop would have a tape ready to play, and almost 75% of the time it was CCR (Creedance Clearwater Revival). I grew up on CCR, Simon and Garfunkel, and a bunch of other folksy stuff, but swing music made an appearance too. Somewhere down the line I progressed in to Hip-Hop, and many more genres, but I never forget what I was raised on.

It's suprising that I'm only a Junior Analyst. If My company new me at all and how I tend to over scrutinize things in my outside life I would surely get a raise, a corner office, and a new title. But fo real do, I am making a strong effort not to over analyze, and low and behold its working just fine. Sorry no Benjie's Hottie Corner today, not for lack of hot girls out there, but there might be such a thing as ass overload. Probably not, it's still a threory I'm working on. Last night at WOW (Whitlow's) for half price burger night CNG (Crazy Neighbor Girl) asked if I was happy with my current situation. I said I was, but cautiously optimistic (to paraphrase). She claimed she won't let herself be happy, and seemed to be stubborn about her stance. I could understand why she would say such a thing, but at the same time I feel like this is the wrong attitude to take. Not only wiht pursuit of yourr happiness but in pursuit of anything in life, one must find the balance between letting things happen and allowing them to happen, but also creating an environment/going after what you want. This balance is somehting I strive to achieve everyday, yet rarely do it seems.

In other news Ma, paid homage to the blog the other night by cooking Lamb Chops, Shrimp and as mentioned in this blog Gispachio, and Squash Casserole. She even said "I made you Gispachio and Squash Casserole, just like you siad you like in your article." Thanks Ma! We topped it all off with grilled peaches w/vanilla ice cream and Kahlua drizzled over top. Yum! I had not seen them since their return form the beach and mine from Cyprus. Many gifts were handed out, and each one loved, Especially Pop's new Ferrari Hat, which I kinda wanted to keep for myself.

I'm Myspacing again, yeah yeah yeah. I know I know I know. ut I've cleaned up my friends list and decided I'm only gonna add people or ask to be firends with peopel I have met beyond the tangled digital web. There are def some people I'd like to re-connect with, and hey it gives me one more idstarction at work. Word.

Funny thing heard on the elevator:
Another beautiful day in Zamunda.
(In African Accent)

No fish were caught, but champagne and chocolate fondue were a hit.

I think if you asked my friends they would say i am not the quiet type. Although that is certainly how I view myself. Somewhat introverted, pensive, and a tad bit shy. Of course this all goes out the window once I am comfortable and get to know you. But i seem to be having a little trouble getting over that hurdle. Maybe I'm afraid of saying the wrong thing, but at this point in my life that's hardly a concern anymore. Still I find myself a little too quiet in the dating situation, I don't think it's an issue that we have nothing to talk about, because that's not true. I'm certainly busy and have a lot going on so I don't think I'm boring, I'm opinionated so wishy washy-ness isn't a problem either. I just can't put my finger on it. Perhaps smoking an L could be the cause, but I don't think it has gotten in the way in the past. I am not the kind of person to say outlandish, or meaningless small talk just to hear my own voice or for the sake of talking. Yet whatever I'm doing doesn't seem to be a problem with the other party, in fact quite the opposite. But still I'm not sure I've let me come out, and me is a pretty cool cat. Just go with the flow like normal I suppose.

BONUS WEDGIE PICK PIC:

I think I could do a whole blog of Anna Kournikova wedgie pickin' shots without repeating a single pic. Amazing. Friday is upon us my friends and I'm already fishing. In my head at least. A big congrats goes out to my folks who have been married 38 years today! Happy Anni Ma and Pop! Hopefully I can catch Sunday's Anni dinner tonight! Nothing like a grilled piece of freshly caught rockfish to say I love you Ma and Pop! Madden 07 has been out almost a week and I still have yet to buy it, is this a sign of will power or empty pockets? I made a calendar, what? Yeah I said it, I made a calendar. I feel kind of dirty now though, it goes against every go with the flow laid back bone in my body. But it was completely necessary as I found out I double booked a weekend already. NASCAR race in Richmond or Bachelor Party in AC, many of you think I probably chose the former since there is a misconception of the depths of my Redneckdom. But AC it is!!! In other news a "friend" was deleted from my MySpace page, ironically I am the one who inroduced them to MySpace, and they have become a junkie for it. I guess I got tired of my name being included on the "invite all" list to parties I would never attend, and it was about time for it to happen. I'm sure in another 3 months I'll get some kind of contact usually via IM, and hopefully then I will have the will power to ignore that IM as well. The sad thing is I really wish I could be friends, but my feelings get in the way, and instead of potentially opening myself up to fall agian, I think I'm doing the mature thing by cutting it off completely. Mature or not it's the healthiest thing for me. A full weekend ensues, with no relief insight until next Thursday. Wishing everyone a great weekend and hoping my goes as well as it possibly can!!!

Oh One more thing kids,

Breakin' VS Krumpin'

DAILY QUOTES

We go where our vision is.
~Joseph Murphy

Love and stoplights can be cruel.
~Sesame Street

BENJIE'S HOTTIE CORNER PRESENTS:

VANESSA MARCIL

The other day as I was scrolling through my OnDemand movies, I came across this little gem. Breakin' VS Krumpin. We all know breakin'/break dancing by now, and with the recent success of the movie Rize many of you know what krumpin' is. This movie puts the two dance form a head to head in a good old fashioned hip-hop dance battle. The movie was narrated by the unexpected Todd Bridges, and co-hosted by Shabadoo. Most people know Todd Bridges as WILLIS and perhaps as a bank robbing coke head, but he was actually very intelligent and enjoyable in this movie. or those that do not know Shabadoo, he appeared in the Breakin' and Breakin' 2 The Electric Boogaloo movies and is recognized as one of the pioneers of break dancing. I have not seen RIZE yet, but was fascinated with Krumpin' so I decided to give the movie a shot, with he added bonus of a battle between these different dance styles I knew I would enjoy it. I will not give a way the winner, because you should see for yourself. But I was completely impressed and enthralled by the Krumpin'. The raw energy, emotion alone were enough to intrigue me. I could understand through dance the plight, strife, hardship and anger these young men from Compton had experienced in their lives. The same emotions and anger that attracted me to hip-hop music. One of my very first tapes (yes tapes) was Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet, which I made my middle aged Jewish father from Brooklyn buy for me due to the Parental Advisory Label. It was obvious to me that Krumpin's roots are in Break Dancing, one could even say Break Dancing is the baby daddy, and Krumpin is the illegitimate child. Whatever the relationship the energy and talent on both sides of this battle makes a worth while watch.

CYPRUS Part 1

I will skip the actual travel from the States to Cyprus portion for now, although that was interesting on its own. Let's start at km 2, just outside of the airport in Larnaca. Here's a map for reference:

6 of us traveled together, but split up at the airport to ourown seperate rides. My mini family consisted of JD and his ho LB. It didn't take JD very long to get used to driving on the left hand side of the road, as he has had to do it before. Our welcome to Cyprus consisted of a very barren, arid landscape and a crazy techno song. All signs pointed to this being a crazy bt fun trip. JD, LB and I traveled north about 45 minutes to the capital city of Lefkosia (Nicosia). Every city in Cyprus has 2 names, and no distinguishable difference of when to use one or the other. We arrived int he capital city to find absolutley no street signs for the names of the streets, none that we could see anyway. After very little confusion we found our beautiful hotel, the Hilton Park. Thank God for JD because he made all the arrangements and this place was incredibly nice. Nothing like a hot shower and a soft bed after 24 hours of straight travel either in an aiport or aboard a plane. After a hot shower and a re-application of extra strength Gold Bond, we hit the town for some eats. The city was beautiful with narrow cobble stone streets and friendly people. We found an incredible restaruant Il Forno. An Italian place but the food was amazing. We all got our own perosnal pizzas, KEO beer and people watched as we dined in the semi open air on the main walking thoro-fare. The peole watching was great especially when the girl behind us in the skirt that was a big as a wrist band was pratically getting humped at the table by her boyfriend. We checked out the old city a little bit and planned our next day which would consist of touring Lefkosia for the first half of the day and then trekking through the Troodos Mountains to or next stop...

Obligatory Weekend Update Cyprus Highlights Delayed Again

DAILY QUOTES

BENJIE'S HOTTIE CORNER PRESENTS: ADRIANNA LIMA

WEEKEND UPDATE
I know, I know...I'm putting off the Cyprus trip highlights again. But it was a pretty eventful weekend, and I don't have enough time at work to fully do the trip any justice.

Friday:
Trudged thru work, really not smart to come back form vacay on friday, but if there is a day u have too, friday might be the best option. Made a lunchtime call to 1/5, and set up a nice li' picnic for us. We went to whole foods bought too much food, and then dined once at the FDR Menorial/ Tidal basin and then once again at her place (thats not a euphemism or innuendo, take it literally). I had a great time sipping on Cypriot wine and taking the sunset in.

Saturday:
Was jam packed with 9 holes of golf, in which I hit the ball better and better, followed by a fishing trip, and the inevitable stop at Gilligan's Pier. Was a somewhat trecherous journey, as the water was rough, and the currents strong. Docking and disembarking form Gilligan's bordered on debacle and may just have crossed that line, as now I have bruises all over my arm, and JD has a broken shelf on the boat.

Sunday:
NASCAR timeof course, and quiet evening in w/ Ray watching Entourage.

ME AND DATING:
Here's an analogy for dtaing and me. Let's say I'm a wide reciever. I study the playbook, I know all my routes. On the field I cut and turn on a dime and run my routes with the percision of Jerry Rice. But when the ball is thrown it's like someone replaced my can of stickem' spray with PAM. I drop the ball. But hopefully I'll be in thenext play and make the catch. I'm probably just overeacting though.

So I'm sitting in the Maple Leaf Lounge Toronto Int'l Airport

So I'm sitting in the Maple Leaf Lounge for Biz Class flyers in Toronto's Int'l Airport. Free internet, ya know I gotta blog! I'm sure everyone knows of all the craziness of today in Great Britain, and the effects have rippled everywhere in the travel world. I have about an hour before I board a flight for Milan, and then off to Cyprus! So far so good! The whole gang is here, JD, LB, SD, JH, SB and me! I even love this part of vacatio0n, the getting there is the adventure you have to pay upfront before you get the big payoff I suppose.

BTW the sign for duty free in french says hors taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!

1/5 still ain't to shabby.

My vacation could not have come at a better time. Besides the fact that it's been probably 4 years since I've had a real one, or over 15 since I've been out of the country. The timing still couldn't be better. 1 outta 5 isn't so bad, in fact its terrific. I plan on making some big lifestyle changes when I get back from vacay.

1. Start gyming like I had been.
2. Eat healthier/ Diet
3. Apply for jobs more aggressively
4. Pursue a new hobby, hello new digital camera!
5. Write more, and finish something

Besides all of that and a chance to start over, I think I had a pretty good date last night, and the whole anxiety about when to call, and all that mishagoss goes out the window. I don't have to "play it cool," I kinda have to since I'll be half way round the world!

1 of 5 ain't so bad, in fact its pretty fucking fantastic.

There are somethings and people I will never understand. But having the curious side of me that I do I will always be intrigued. Confusion rules the day. But whatever drama occurred in my life the last week or this weekend, only one real event/moment sticks out.
I went to Target to pick up all my mini toiletries for my upcoming vacation. (Cyprus here I come! Only 3 more days and I'm off!) While in the mini isle a couple who appeared to be strung out on God knows what bought tiny little soaps and tiny little everything else I assume because everything was pretty much under a dollar. The woman acted slightly frantic while the man just watched/looked at me with a glazed over look in his eyes. It was kind of a wired feeling buying mini-toiletries for a trip, because I could and because I had extra money or saved money to do so, while this poor couple bought them because thats what they could afford. What ever dram I had in the last week, kind of melted away, and whatever drama I experienced after that day, that moment was still in my mind and made it melt away too. Well almost its more like slush then fully melted, but then again so is my mind.

3 Days til Cyprus

Donnie Brasco Says:
Forget about it is like if you agree with someone, you know, like Raquel Welch is one great piece of ass, forget about it. But then, if you disagree, like A Lincoln is better than a Cadillac? Forget about it! you know? But then, it's also like if something's the greatest thing in the world, like mingia those peppers, forget about it. But it's also like saying Go to hell! too. Like, you know, like "Hey Paulie, you got a one inch pecker?" and Paulie says "Forget about it!" Sometimes it just means forget about it.

It's true I am a Grease virgin. I know what you're all thinking, Sammy has seen so many movies, he went to summer sleep away camp, and he's not adverse to "chick flicks." But i's true I have never see the movie Grease. I may know most of the songs, thanks to sleep away camp. I also have been known to watch chick flicks in the name of spending quality time with girls I really like. No it has become a point of pride, I've gone this long with out watching it, it's gonna take a lot to get me to watch it. I'm not opposed to popping my cherry, it just has to be for the right girl. Titanic may fall in to this category too, but I'm not as adamant about that movie as I am about Grease. I'm not sure why I chose to draw the battle lines on the front of Grease, but that's my Maginot Line. Not saying that the line is the strongest in the world because God knows the real Maginot Line wasn't. But it would take a special girl to blitzkrieg my defenses and get me to watch that movie.

Music Reviews

DAILY QUOTES

I'm fightin for strength, in the street grindin for cents
I know I'm ahead of my time but I'm behind on my rent
~Rhymefest from Devil's Pie on the album Blue Collar

Only the words of love kept alive are worthy of not being wasted
~Arlo Guthrie

BENJIE'S HOTTIE CORNER PRESENTS:
SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Highly, highly reccomend the album Blue Collar by Rhymefest. Rhymefest wrote/co-wrote Jesus Walks for Kanye West, and basically won a Grammy before his own album even came out. If you like Kanye's producing skillz, then you're assured to like this album. Rhymesfest definetly brings it where flow/lyrical abilities ae concerned. The album has alot of cameo/guest spots on it that don't dissappoint either.

Pharrel's new album In My Mind, needs another listen before I give it a comlete review, but as expected I like maybe half the songs. Maybe I'm tired of the Neptunes sound, or I expected more, and somehting a little different or groundbreaking, but I'm not gonna come right out and say it's a great album yet. Especially not before another full listen. It did however put me to sleep, which in my strange way is the sign of a good album.

Johnny Cash's posthoumous release American V: A Hundred Highways, does fufill expectations. His haunting yet soothing voice does justice to a few different covers including Sprinsteen, Hank Williams Jr., and even Gordon Lightfoot songs. A must have for any Johnny Cash fan.
I have yet to get a complete copy of Jurrasic 5's new album, which will happen later tonight. But when I do expect a review.

In other news I'm super excited for my trip to Cyprus, which will commence in 8 days. Everything planning and prepping wise is going along smoothly. This will be my first trip out of the USA in amore than 15 years, and my first substantial vacation in almost 4.

RACHEL McADAMS

Yes it's true I am an addict. I am addicted to new music. Well new to me anyways. Last night I spent a good portion of my down time downloading albums of the internet. Addicts are as much addicted to the ritual as they are to the substance. The cutting of lines, rolling of blunts, or for me now, the clicking of a mouse, and the handing over of my credit card to what ever psuedo hipster/goth kid is behind the counter at Tower Records. Then the copying on to the Nano Nano, or the struggling with the stupid Fort Knox of cellophane around the CD. Then the climax, listening to something for the first time ever, it's like heroin into the vein. I think this is part of my love for hip-hop. No other music quotes other musicians as frequently, or samples other music as much. This leads me down a path of discovery, what was MC-Quotes A Lot talking about when he said this, who was he referring to, what song was that originally from. Or did DJ Clips and samples really just use a cut form Herb Alpert and the Tiajuanna Brass? Wow, I'd really love to hear the original tune. This is how my mind works, always churning always discovering. Last night my brother introduced me to a new music "dealer," bit-torrent files. He has tried to explain them or intro them to me before, but last night I got hooked. Much better for downloading whole albums at a time. I'll still use my old standbys, iTunes (when I have money), Limewire (when I don't), but this just adds another supplier.

Last night's downloads:
Pharell's new joint In My Mind
Blue Collar Rhymefest
Johnny Cash American V: A Hundred Highways

Getting the shakes now, must go listen to new music.
